Among its benefits --it will lower high blood pressure, it is the body’s best electrolytes source, and it helps to prevent bone loss.    Health research advocates recommend  that 4700 milligrams per day should be taken, but the key is not so much of the amount of daily intake is of potassium as the ratio of potassium consumed of  is to the amount of daily sodium  consumed. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The recommended ratio is potassium 4 to l  above sodium, but in recent years the increase in consumption of sodium  has jumped in many instances to a one to one ratio which has caused  a multitude of health problems. Recently a large clinical study proved  that five servings of fruits and vegetables per day was just as effective in controlling high blood pressure as a single blood pressure drug.  Green vegetables such as broccoli, green cabbage, lettuce, celery and tomatoes eaten raw will provide an abundance of potassium with few calories.  The raw vegetables provide better nutritional values than the cooked versions. Other foods with large amounts of potassium include salmon, cod fish and chicken. Fruits with large amounts of potassium include bananas, avocados, and cantaloupes . Research indicates that a hearty laugh is just as good as exercise in improving blood flow.  A recent  study at  the University of Maryland  consisted of  20  healthy nonsmoking  volunteers , each  with  a blood  pressure  cuff  and ultra-sound  machine  to measure blood  flow in a major artery. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The opening scene of the war movie, Saving Private Ryan, which showed the violence of World War 2, was shown to half the group. The other half was shown a part of the comedy Kingpin, which was an extremely funny movie.  The groups were switched two days later watching the same films. The difference was startling and indicates that blood vessels relax and dilate to improve blood flow while stress does just the opposite. In the test , 14 of the 20  had  constricted  blood  flow a few minutes  after watching  Saving Private Ryan , but  after seeing the funny movie, blood  vessels  opened  up  in 19 of the 20  participants .&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Research revealed that patients undergoing surgery felt less pain when exposed to humor.  A study published in the Journal of Holistic Nursing reported that patients after surgery and before receiving pain medication were told one liners.  Those that were given the one-liners felt less pain than the ones who did not receive the one liner treatment.  This has created the belief that laughter and humor will minimize pain and speed the healing process. According to an article in 2005 in the Wall Street Journal, the research on turmeric is exploding.  Based on a search of the U.S. National Library of Medicine, two hundred and fifty-six papers were published in 2005 on curcumin, the active ingredient of turmeric. This has caused a significant increase in the sales of curcumin supplements – a 35% increase in 2005 over 2004. At the present time, the U. S. National Institute of Health has four clinical trials underway to study curcumin treatment for pancreatic cancer, colorectal cancer, Alzheimer’s and multiple myeloma.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Curcumin’s powerful antioxidant properties have long been considered a cancer fighter. Its victims notice a gradual loss of memory. They forget names and appointments, cannot think as clearly and have an inability to make decisions. Although these symptoms can indicate Alzheimer's, they do not positively indicate Alzheimer's because other conditions of dementia have similar symptoms.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Alzheimer's can only be positively confirmed by an autopsy and an examination of the brain. Causes of the disease are not known and there is no cure but some drugs as directed by your doctor may be beneficial in slowing the progress of the disease. Recent research indicates that non-steroidal drugs such as aspirin, naproxin, and ibuprofen taken steadily over many years afford protection from Alzheimer's. However, these drugs have dangerous side affects if taken for long periods. The drugs may cause kidney failure or bleeding ulcers that are life threatening.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In this recent research there are indications that fish oil supplements may be helpful with no side affects. The latest research also indicates that Human Growth Hormone has been helpful in anti-aging, which includes help for preventing Alzheimer's or in slowing the progress of the condition. This therapy of HGH must be under a doctor's care and recommendation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Just because you have the above mentioned symptioms does not mean that you have Alzheimer's, because anyone with advancing age may have problems remembering names and faces. For example, in a study in 2004 at John Hopkins, people who took 500 to 1000 milligrams daily of vitamin C or up to 1000 IU of vitamin E had a 78 percent lower risk of Alzheimer's than the ones who had not taken the vitamins. In a&lt;br /&gt;Dutch study, people who had each day taken more than 23 IU's of vitamin E had a 43 percent lower risk of getting the disease compared to the ones not taken vitamin E. This Dutch study indicated all vitamin E was from food and not supplements.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In a Rush University study people who had 800 IU's each day had protection of 60 percent compared to the ones not taking the vitamins. Many other studies have also indicated that reducing the total intake of calories not only adds years to life, it also protects the body from many serious diseases and complications. There are indications that diabetics have increased danger of Alzheimer's and this can be helped with fish oil supplements which combats insulin resistence that is a precursor of diabetes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The proper nutrition program means to eat no refined glucose or carbohydrates, to eat fruits, vegetables, whole grains, cold water fish or sardines two to three times per week, lean protein, and broiled or baked chicken. It is not necessary to join a club or have any special equipment because one of the best exercises could be a thirty minute walk in your neighborhood. Almost any kind of exercise will help.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The mental exercises could be working difficult crossword puzzles, reading books or articles that require concentration, studying a new subject or anything that makes you concentrate or think. Your mind is similar to other parts of your body. If you quit exercising your legs or quit walking by sitting in a wheel chair, it would not be long before your legs would be useless.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Your social life and interaction with family and friends will also be beneficial for a healthy lifestyle program for prevention of Alzheimer's. When the body is injured, inflammation is the first line of defense. When inflammation persists, it can develop into a chronic condition that may be responsible for heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease and similar maladies. Sometimes an auto-immune disorder may arise from inflammation. The first chocolate drink developed by the Aztecs was produced from beans on the cocoa trees. The Aztecs revered cocoa believing that it was brought to earth from the gods as a blessing to the people.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Cortez, the Spanish conqueror of Mexico, introduced cocoa to Spain in 1528 during the reign of King Charles V. The Spanish would not divulge the secret of processing chocolate to any of the European countries and would allow only monks in the monasteries to process the beans into chocolate. The secret eventually was obtained by other countries as Spain declined as a political power.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Chocolate became popular, but in the 17th century only the rich could afford it and it functioned as a currency among the countries at that time. However, when the price of chocolate dropped in the early 18th century it was no longer only for the wealthy.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Although chocolate has been one of the most popular foods of the last two centuries, in recent years it has been considered junk food. However, present research has shown it to have great health benefits that may restore it to the elite status it enjoyed during the 17th century.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here are some of the benefits:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. It ranks number one as an anti-oxident. ORAC is a measurement of antioxident activitiy. On the ORAC scale, dark chocolate measures 13,120. Other foods ranked in comparison are raisins 2,830, blueberries 2,400, spinach 1,260, and broccoli 890. Antioxidents destroy free radicals, thus protecting the body from heart disease and cancer.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2. It lowers cholesterol and high blood pressure. A recent study indicated that dark chocolate dropped the level of blood pressure and cholesterol by 10 points in only two weeks of taking chocolate.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3. The flavenoids in dark chocolate decrease inflammation. Lowering inflammation helps to heal chronic disease and pain.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;4. Dark chocolate helps to prevent blood clots thus reducing the danger of heart attack and stroke.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;5. Dark chocolate helps reduce insulin resistance. Insulin resistance builds up too high a level of insulin in the body. A study on insulin sensitivitiy revealed that chocolate significantly improved the sensitivity healthy bodies should have.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;6. Most people love the feeling they receive from chocolate and love it like nothing else. Few foods taste so good. Montezuma, the ruler of the Aztecs was reputed to have drunk 50 cups a day of chocolate! The euphoria obtained from chocolate may occur because it has a substance that regulates the build up of serotonin. If the brain has enough serotonin, a person feels relief from anxiety. Chocolate releases endorphins in the brain which give you a wonderful feeling of happiness.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sure, chocolate is loaded with calories and fat. But the benefits cannot be questioned. The safe way to enjoy chocolate is to count the calories and take those calories out of other foods in your meals. Good quality dark chocolate can be obtained in health food stores and grocery stores. All of the major chocolate producers have special dark chocolate bars. One has a special dark chocolate bar in a small oblong pack about one inch long and one half inch wide that makes a nice serving of 50 calories. Look for bars with 55 percent or more of cocoa. Keep in mind that the benefits are from dark chocolate, not from milk chocolate. The number of diabetics could be far above this because the growth of this condition in Africa, Asia, and Latin America is staggering. Millions of people are unaware they are diabetics and more than 200 millions of pre-diabetics are waiting in the wings to join this group. Eighteen million people are known diabetics in the U.S. with another 41 million pre-diabetics. &lt;strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;So one in every five Americans is a diabetic or will shortly be one.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The affect of this rapid development of the condition in the U.S. alone results in&lt;em&gt; &lt;strong&gt;40,000 diabetics with kidney disease, 82,000 with amputations, and 24,000 who are blind&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/em&gt;. &lt;strong&gt;Do you want to be one of these people?&lt;/strong&gt; Life expectancy is reduced up to 20 years-a result which can cost America 130 billion a year. Millions of people will suffer life threatening conditions before being diagnosed with diabetes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Diabetes 2 is no longer a disease only for the elderly, because young people are becoming increasingly obese--a common precursor of diabetes. Much of this obesity is due to the intake of sugars in soft drinks which now is estimated at 20 percent of total calories. During the last ten years the number of diabetics in young people has quadrupled and now is continuing at an even faster pace. The first symptoms of diabetes are often frequent urination and increased thirst. Other symptoms could be fatigue and increasing hunger with general fatigue.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Diabetes 2 is caused by a sedentary lifestyle and overeating, particularly of refined carbohydrates and sugar. &lt;strong&gt;The most effective prevention of diabetes is in a healthy lifestyle of exercise, &lt;em&gt;proper nutrition&lt;/em&gt;, and weight control&lt;/strong&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Proper nutrition means to eliminate all refined carbohydrates and glucose, to instead eat fruits, vegetables, lean protein, sardines, coldwater fish, sprouted grain bread, whole grains and fiber.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Because most diabetics are overweight, &lt;strong&gt;weight control is of the utmost importance&lt;/strong&gt;. A reduction in body weight of five to ten percent may be all it takes to bring the blood sugar level within the normal 70 to 110 milligrams per deciliter of blood. &lt;em&gt;An exercise program of thirty minute periods three to six times per week plus a reduction of 25 percent of calories per day will accomplish the weight control.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The best food for fiber and many other benefits is two tablespoons of &lt;em&gt;&lt;strong&gt;ground golden brown flax seed &lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/em&gt;each day. Here's what the study entailed:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Half the group was shown the opening scene of the war movie &lt;em&gt;Saving Private Ryan&lt;/em&gt;, depicting the unspeakable violence of World War 2.&lt;br /&gt;The other half was shown a part of the comedy &lt;em&gt;Kingpin&lt;/em&gt;, an extremely funny movie.&lt;br /&gt;The groups were switched two days later watching the same films.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;The difference was startling.&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The research showed that humor relaxes the blood vessels and improves blood flow while stress does &lt;em&gt;just the opposite&lt;/em&gt;. In the test, 14 of the 20 had constricted blood flow for a few minutes after watching Saving Private Ryan, but after seeing the funny movie, blood vessels opened up in 19 of the 20 participants.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It seems that other studies have even indicated that humor and laughter can decrease pain associated with surgery. A study, published in the &lt;em&gt;Journal of Holistic Nursing&lt;/em&gt;, reported that patients after surgery and before receiving pain medication were told one-liners. Those that were given the one-liners felt less pain than the ones who did not receive the one-liner treatment. This has created the belief that laughter and humor will minimize pain and speed the healing process! Who said that laughter shouldn't be part of post-surgical prescriptions? Thank God you don't need a doctor to get a laugh (&lt;em&gt;well, bite my tongue&lt;/em&gt;). It differs from most forms in that after relaxation, it focuses on specific subjects to visualize that can relate more to conditions of health.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Guided Imagery has been around about thirty years but with a limited few practictioners because the medical community had no interest in it. However, it is now gaining popularity and acceptance due to studies conducted at the Cleveland Clinic. Research at the Cleveland Clinic indicated that people recovering from open heart and colon surgery only needed half of the normal pain medication and were released two days earlier when they used guided imagery tapes for 15 to 30 minutes two sessions per day. In addition the people undergoing surgery had less anxiety and stress. Because of the Cleveland Clinic studies, many hospitals in the U.S. have adopted this procedure as it is a huge money saver and creates less dependence on medication which cuts down the side effects of drugs.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;All health and medical problems create stress and anxiety and guided imagery with its relaxation decreases this condition and builds up the immune system at the same time. By directing their thoughts and visualizations on the health or medical problem involved, they can get specific results.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Here is how to get started on guided imagery: Visualize the place that is the most relaxing and pleasant place to be &lt;/span&gt;. Picture the time when you have been the happiest at this place. Gradually relax your entire body, close your eyes, enjoy seeing and re-living the wonderful times, you have had at this place. After the total relaxation and enjoyment, if you have a specific ailment or condition that needs to be corrected such as obesity, picture a dragon trying to coax you to eat and your immune system soldiers fighting him away.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Set aside two fifteen to thirty minute periods each day when you will not be disturbed. Try a period after lunch and a period before bed time or any period that is convenient or suits you. The researches reported that increasing protein up to thirty three percent of total calories per day caused the metabolism to work on a 24 hour period. This not only caused the metabolism to work at night, it also increased the metabolism rate in day time hours. Participants in the study which were all women stated that when they were on the increased schedule of lean protein that they had felt that the meals were more complete as they had less desire to continue eating than when they were on the ten percent diet. The participants felt more comfortable after a meal of the thirty three percent intake than the ten percent protein meal.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;According to Margaret Westerterp-Plantenga, the study's lead author stated that the body does not store protein as efficiently as it does carbohydrates or fats, so protein is more likely to be burned, a process called thermogenesis. This requires more oxygen and helps a person feel more satisfied in the hours after eating.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This does not make the Atkins diet more desirable because the&lt;br /&gt;Atkins diet had many drawbacks which included excessive amounts of fats with a major portion of the fats unacceptable. It also had no or extremely limited amounts of fruits and vegetables that have necessary nutrients that cannot be obtained from protein. Recommendations from this study are to increase the protein to no more than twenty five percent of total calories per day.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The best mix of foods should be fruits and vegetables at forty five percent, fats at thirty percent with a large portion of the fats of omega 3, and proteins at twenty five percent of total calories. This condition might only extend to conditions such as anxiety if a speech or demonstration has to be made before a group or gathering. This could also happen when performing in a play or playing a musical instrument in front of an audience. Almost everyone has some nervousness while making a speech to a group or meeting a crowd of new people but in persons affected with social phobia, it could cause a person to avoid the situation whenever possible (and at other times to be terribly distressed from the ordeal).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Treatment is to do the thing you fear.&lt;/strong&gt;  Do the thing you fear at &lt;strong&gt;every&lt;/strong&gt; opportunity.&lt;br /&gt;For example, take a course from the Dale Carnegie School that teaches how to overcome fear of public speaking or join the Toastmasters Club that meets once a week and every member has a speaking assignment at every meeting.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;Take every chance that comes along to speak before a group.&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;What a person fears most is the possibility of failure or making an embarrassing mistake.&lt;/em&gt; Preparation of the speech will give you more confidence than anything else.&lt;br /&gt;If a person's problem is meeting new people, then take every opportunity to meet strangers. For best results do the exercises outlined in my letter and also have a general exercise program combined with proper nutrition. These can all be conveniently done lying on your back with or without a pillow. Do these each morning when you wake up as you need no equipment or help.&lt;br /&gt;The first exercise is to lie flat on your back with arms to your side and legs straight. Take a deep breath, lower and pull in your chin while tightening and flexing your stomach and pelvic mucles. Hold this position for ten seconds.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The second exercise begins while lying flat with legs extended and arms extended straight back parallel to your body. While in this position on your bed take a deep breath, lower and pull in your chin and tighten and flex your stomach and pelvic muscles and begin to rotate your arms alternately from the starting position to alongside your legs. Do this exercise for thirty repetitions.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The third exercise is identical to the second exercise except rotate your legs instead of the arms like walking by alternately bringing each leg up to where the knee touches your body then extending the leg to the starting position. Do this exercise for thirty repetitions.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The fourth exercise begins in the same position as the second and third exercises but after taking a deep breath, pulling in your chin, and tightening and flexing the pervic and stomach muscles, you do the exercise with arms and legs at the same time with fifty repetitions. After three or four days on these exercises increase the number of repetitions on this fourth exercise to one hundred or more repetitions.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The fifth exercise after the starting position in the first exercise is to take a deep breath, tighten your legs and stomach muscles then bring up your legs with bent knees and each hand holds the knees to the chest as tightly as possible. This exercise is to have four repetitions.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The sixth and last exercise is to start from the beginning position, with each arm extending sideways and knees brought in close to your body. While in this position move the legs together from the farthest left possible to the farthest right possible This is to be done with the chin in and stomach's pelvic muscles tightened and flexed. This should be ten repetitions.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you are overweight, reduce the amount of your food for each meal by 25 percent and this will be helpful in both weight reduction and your fat loss in the areas needed.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To get maximum benefit you should have a diet that is properly nutritional. Eat no refined carbohydrates or glucose. Refined carbohydrates are foods such as white bread, cookies, doughnuts. Refined glucose is table sugar or sugar added to drinks such as tea or coffee.
