Potassium-Potassium versus sodium

Potassium is a necessary nutrient that the body must have, is present in the body in varying amounts, is available in almost all foods, and has many important benefits. Among its benefits --it will lower high blood pressure, it is the body’s best electrolytes source, and it helps to prevent bone loss. Health research advocates recommend that 4700 milligrams per day should be taken, but the key is not so much of the amount of daily intake is of potassium as the ratio of potassium consumed of is to the amount of daily sodium consumed.

The recommended ratio is potassium 4 to l above sodium, but in recent years the increase in consumption of sodium has jumped in many instances to a one to one ratio which has caused a multitude of health problems. This increase in sodium intake has been because of the amount of processed foods in the diet. Processed foods are loaded with sodium which contributes to the danger of high blood pressure. Fruits and vegetables have an abundant of potassium so the recommended ratio can be reached by increasing the amount of fruit and vegetable servings and cutting back on processed foods.

Research for many years has indicated that potassium benefits high blood pressure. Recently a large clinical study proved that five servings of fruits and vegetables per day was just as effective in controlling high blood pressure as a single blood pressure drug. Green vegetables such as broccoli, green cabbage, lettuce, celery and tomatoes eaten raw will provide an abundance of potassium with few calories. The raw vegetables provide better nutritional values than the cooked versions. Other foods with large amounts of potassium include salmon, cod fish and chicken. Fruits with large amounts of potassium include bananas, avocados, and cantaloupes . Do not start this program before reviewing this with your doctor.

Laugh Away Your Health and Medical Problems

Several studies from the University of Maryland, from the Loma Linda University of California, and from the American College of Cardiology have confirmed the health and medical benefits of laughter. Research indicates that a hearty laugh is just as good as exercise in improving blood flow. A recent study at the University of Maryland consisted of 20 healthy nonsmoking volunteers , each with a blood pressure cuff and ultra-sound machine to measure blood flow in a major artery.

The opening scene of the war movie, Saving Private Ryan, which showed the violence of World War 2, was shown to half the group. The other half was shown a part of the comedy Kingpin, which was an extremely funny movie. The groups were switched two days later watching the same films. The difference was startling and indicates that blood vessels relax and dilate to improve blood flow while stress does just the opposite. In the test , 14 of the 20 had constricted blood flow a few minutes after watching Saving Private Ryan , but after seeing the funny movie, blood vessels opened up in 19 of the 20 participants .

Research revealed that patients undergoing surgery felt less pain when exposed to humor. A study published in the Journal of Holistic Nursing reported that patients after surgery and before receiving pain medication were told one liners. Those that were given the one-liners felt less pain than the ones who did not receive the one liner treatment. This has created the belief that laughter and humor will minimize pain and speed the healing process. This means that laughter and humor will cooperate with conventional medical and health remedies.

Take advantage of the free health benefits of laughter and humor by watching more funny movies, avoiding stressful movies, and always looking at the funny side of life.. Glyconutient Discovery

Mannatech's g;yconutrient matrix is a “revolutionary advancement in vitamin, mineral and phytochemical supplementation.” In a July 27, 2006 press release, Mannatech announced “it plans to introduce PhytoMatrix, the nutrition industry’s first supplement containing fully standardized and completely plant-based vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals.”
In the press announcement, Mannatech includes the following points: “Modern farming practices have dramatically compromised the nutritional value of many fruits and vegetables. And while experts agree that supplementation can provide the body with
these missing nutrients, many supplements contain synthetic, chemically derived, mined or chelated minerals and vitamins that studies show are not readily absorbed or used by the body.”
By the way, you can read more about the company, its products and how to buy them at my son’s website at www.mannapages.com/craigglickman You can even learn how to create substantial referral income by telling others about the products. But back to the press release:
“Scheduled for sale beginning during the fourth quarter, PhytoMatrix will not contain any synthetic or chemically derived active ingredients. Instead, it will contain vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals that have been absorbed by a plant’s roots and stored in its tissue. When harvested, these plants provide all-natural ingredients.
“An article in the Vol. 71, 2000, edition of peer-reviewed Journal of Food Chemistry stated that plant-based minerals are much more easily absorbed by the body. The article referenced a study showing the body was able to use less than 10 percent of the synthetic minerals contained in the most popular brands of multivitamins. By contrast, the body was able to assimilate between 80 percent to 100 percent of the minerals derived from plants.
“Mannatech has obtained exclusive rights to a patented, hydroponic cultivation technology that allows plants to absorb significantly greater quantities of minerals. This 10-year agreement with INB:B Technology (AMEX-INB) of New Jersey makes Mannatech the only network marketing company allowed to use a blend of six or more INB-harvested minerals. PhytoMatrix will contain 10 minerals.
“INB developed its hydroponics process during the 1990s using Indian mustard, widely known as “nature’s magnet” for its ability to absorb minerals from the soil. Growing Indian mustard using enriched hydroponic cultivation can significantly increase the number and amount of minerals concentrated in the plant’s tissue.
“A recent study showed that Indian mustard grown using enriched cultivation produced concentrations of iron, zinc and chromium many times greater than concentrations found in mineral-rich vegetables purchased from a local market. The enriched cultivation used for PhytoMatrix will provide optimum quantities of the most essential minerals. In fact, a daily serving of PhytoMatrix will provide the same amount of minerals typically found in several pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables. The body uses minerals for many important functions, including the activation of enzymes, hormones and other molecules needed to sustain life.
“In addition to plant-sourced minerals, PhytoMatrix will contain plant-sourced vitamins. When derived from the plant matrix, vitamins come with the beneficial fibers, sugars and organic acids that reside in natural matrices – providing the body with maximum benefit and functionality.
“PhytoMatrix will provide a substantial portion of the Recommended Daily Allowance of vitamins and minerals as well as powerful plant-derived phytochemicals. A 2003 issue of Nature Reviews defined the role of phytochemicals as ‘halting or retarding the progression of pre-cancerous cells to malignant ones.’ Science has shown there is a synergy when various plant-sourced vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals are combined.
“Mannatech has filed for a patent protecting the combination of the key technologies that comprise PhytoMatrix. ‘PhytoMatrix is a revolutionary advancement that is indicative of the focus Mannatech places on securing the best technology to support the market’s best and most unique products,’ said Mannatech founder, CEO and Chairman of the Board Sam Caster. ‘While some companies focus on creating an extremely large product line, Mannatech tailors its research and development to create and maintain a few core optimal products.’
“Founded in 1993, Mannatech is a leading wellness company and a pioneer in the field of proprietary glyconutritional supplements and wellness products. The company announced a ground-breaking formulation in 1996 of a nutritional supplement comprised of a unique blend of plant-based sugars, which are also known as glyconutrients (‘glyco’ is the Greek word for ‘sweet’).
“Medical research acknowledges that eight glyconutrient sugars are needed at the cellular level for optimum immune system function. Considering that six of these glyconutrients are often lacking in modern diets, Mannatech sought new and better sources of the nutrients. The effort culminated in the Ambrotose complex. Twenty patents – including one from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office – have been issued to Mannatech for technology related to the Ambrotose complex.
“Today Mannatech has more than two dozen glyconutritional products for adults and children that address health and nutrition, sports performance, weight management and skin care.
“Mannatech is listed on the NASDAQ Global Select National Market under the symbol ‘MTEX."’ For over a decade, Mannatech has developed innovative, high-quality, proprietary nutritional supplements, topical products and weight-management products, which are sold through independent associates operating throughout the United States and the international markets of Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, Japan, New Zealand, Republic of Korea, Taiwan, Denmark, and Germany.
As I mentioned, you can read more about the company, its products and how to buy them at my son’s website www.mannapages.com/craigglickman And again, you can also learn how telling others about the products can create substantial referral income for you!

Heart Failure News

Heart failure is a dangerous condition in which the heart has lost its ability to pump the normal amount of blood throgh the circulatory system needed for all bodily activities. Many people confuse " Heart Failure" with "Heart Attack". Heart failure is a gradual deterioration of the heart with no immediate threat of death, but a heart attack is when a coronary artery blocks the flow of blood to the heart which can cause death in a short time. There are many causes for heart failure and most are other diseases that weaken the heart such as diabetes, myocarditis, obesity, coronary artery disease.and many other diseases plus poor habits such as a sedentery lifestyle, smoking, poor diet, and no weight control. Inborn heart defects can also be causes.

No matter how far the heart failure has advanced the most effective treatment and also the most effective preventative is to change the lifestyle into a healthy lifestyle of proper diet, exercise and weight control. Even advanced stages of heart failure will still give many more years of survival with a healthy lifestye. A healthy diet means to eat no refined carbohydrates or glucose, eat fruits, vegetables, cold water fish, lean protein, sprouted grain bread, and fiber. The exercise program should be thirty minutes three to six times per week. Special food should be two tablespoons of ground flax seed mixed with water,.fruit juice. or soy milk. Special supplements to take are a daily multivitamin and Co-Q10. Before starting this program consult your health provider.

Turmeric--Its Multiple Health Benefits

Western countries are taking notice of its health benefits too. According to an article in 2005 in the Wall Street Journal, the research on turmeric is exploding. Based on a search of the U.S. National Library of Medicine, two hundred and fifty-six papers were published in 2005 on curcumin, the active ingredient of turmeric. This has caused a significant increase in the sales of curcumin supplements – a 35% increase in 2005 over 2004. At the present time, the U. S. National Institute of Health has four clinical trials underway to study curcumin treatment for pancreatic cancer, colorectal cancer, Alzheimer’s and multiple myeloma.

Curcumin’s powerful antioxidant properties have long been considered a cancer fighter. A study involving genetically altered mice by UCLA-Veterans Affairs indicated that turmeric might inhibit the accumulation of harmful beta amyloids in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients and in addition may even eliminate existing plaques.

Other recent studies indicate turmeric can be effective against STDs including chlamydia and gonorrhea.

The low incidence of colorectal cancer among ethnic groups who consume large amounts of curries compared with groups who do not is an indication of cancer benefits from turmeric.

Studies have also shown the effectiveness of curcumin in the elimination of inflammation from arthritis.

Green Tea--Its Multiple Benefits

Tea is considered to have been discovered in China. It has been an important part of Asian culture for many centuries. Its health benefits were first described in a Japanese text in the 9th century. Green tea has been popular in China, Taiwan and Japan for centuries and in recent years has become popular in the Western countries, particularly in the U. S.

Research indicates that green tea may have health benefits for the following problems:

Atherosclerosis

High cholesterol

Cancer

Diabetes

Liver problems

Weight control

Alzheimer’s

Experts debate the health effects of green tea and some studies have not shown favorable results for its use.

However, other studies show green tea has health benefits for cholesterol, atherosclerosis, diabetes, and liver problems.

Additional studies show that polyphenols in green tea are an antioxidant that can help fight cancer.

According to clinical trials at the University of Geneva in Switzerland, green tea raises thermogenesis which increases the burning of calories and thereby assists in weight reduction.

A study in 2006 indicated that elderly Japanese people who drank two cups of green tea had a lower chance of memory loss than those who drank less than two
cups a day of green tea.

The U.S/ Food and Drug administration issued a report in 2005 that qualified health claims for consumption of green tea. This conclusion of the FDA was based on extensive studies in Asia.

Selenium--Your protection against cancer.

Selenium is a necessary nutrient that the body must have. It is a trace element that is only required in small amounts, but it is an element that the body must have to stay alive.

Antioxidents are a vital part of the immune system that eliminates oxygen free radicals before they can destroy cells and body organs. Although selenium is not an antioxident such as vitamin C, it prevents them from forming which makes it an important part of the immune system.

Selenium protects against cancer in its ability to build up the immune
system. This comes from the role selenium plays in protection against oxygen free radicals. Oxygen radical cells are produced by the body's immune system to destroy cancer cells. To do this job, the immune cells must be supplied with enough selenium to protect the immune cells from the oxygen cells they produce. Selenium is necessary for the enzymes that protect the immune cells.

Selenium has a variety of functions that is far superior to any other single element or ingredient in the body. Research on animals indicates that required amounts of selenium help to reduce the risk of most forms of cancer which include, kidney, lung, prostate, stomach, pancreas, rectum, colon, breast, liver, skin, leukemia, bladder, and ovary. Research on humans also indicates protection against cancer by selenium.

In addition to protection against cancer, selenium also protects against many other conditions helped by a strong immune system. Research in China indicates that selenium lowered incidence of Hepatitis B. Recent research indicates that selenium is helpful in protection against colds and flu. Selenium is needed for brain health as suggested by research that people with Alzheimer's had 40 percent lower amount of selenium in blood level than people without Alzheimer's.

To have adequate selenium in your blood requires from 200 to 300 micrograms per day. It is better to obtain this from foods instread of supplements. The main sources of selenium is in products such as eggs, meat, milk and whole grains. Brazil nuts are loaded with selenium and an ounce a day of Brazil nuts will provide 200 micrograms per day. It is not recommended to take more than 300 micrograms per day.
